The LORD is my light and my salvation—
so why should I be afraid? Psalm 27:1a (NLT)

Whizzing down highway 99 in my 1983 Toyota 2wd (wheel drive) pickup with 180,000 miles on it, I was set for a good time. I was heading out to play in the mud and back roads of Galt, CA, better known in our group and unofficially as, “Liberty Off-Road Park”. It was a privately owned piece of land that we had no permission to be on, a place where we had been “asked to leave” many times before, a place to have fun and see how muddy your truck could get. The objective of any true “mudder” is to have so much mud on the truck, that one could not determine the vehicle’s actual color!

Last night I was watching the Billabong snowboard competition in New Zealand. No, I was not in New Zealand. I was in my oversized leather club chair watching it take place on the TV. In the back of my mind...then in the front of my mind...then in the back and so forth (depending on the cool air the riders were getting), I realized something. I am not really part of this scene, but these riders are totally part of it. They are in it and doing it. For me, it was entertainment and something to pass the time, but for them it is their life. I must admit, I was a bit jealous.

Psalm 23: Part 3

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.

Psalm 23: Part 2

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul…

Part of choosing Jesus as your shepherd is to choose to spend time with Him listening for His voice and observing His ways in nature. Obviously we hear His voice in scripture—that is why we memorize and dwell on the 23rd Psalm—but we can also personally hear the “still small voice” that Elijah heard so many years ago.

Psalm 23: Part 1

Two of the most special gifts God has given us are prayer and The Bible. I know what you’re thinking: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Heard it all before. The Bible is great and I should pray more. Whatever! Believe me, I know how you feel.

The mere mention of the word makes me tired. It is a word that wont give up its essence to anyone who is unwilling to sweat for it. If you don’t run wind-sprints on the football field, expect to be winded at the end of the game. Why? You lack _________________? Tired of endless fast-break drills and suicide runs at B-Ball practice? Then get ready for forth quarter leg-cramps and jumpshots that fall like rocks off the rim. Elite athletes know that without stamina, success becomes a game of chance instead of the natural result of hard work.

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the almighty.  --Psalm 91:1 (NKJV)

Upon reading this scripture as an assignment for a class I took at Andrews University, the word “secret” really stuck out in my mind. I’ve contemplated scripture a lot and I think learning to do this on the run is critically important to keeping God on one’s mind at all times. So, as I headed across campus to pick something up at the bookstore, I began to ponder the word “secret”.
